First Fork

The best app for gestational diabetes tracking: 6 apps compared

We rank First Fork first: it counts down each after-meal check on your Lock Screen and makes the report your clinic reads. We make First Fork, so read the reasons below. Malama is second, for Bluetooth meter sync and prenatal nutritionists. If your clinic already gave you an app, use that one.

Disclosure. First Fork is made by the team behind this site, and we rank it first. We know First Fork from the inside. For the other apps, this page uses only what each App Store listing says (read on 22 October 2026); an app can do more than its listing says. This page does not compare costs; see each App Store page.

Why a tracking app helps

With gestational diabetes, you check your blood sugar with a meter and keep a record of every reading. ACOG asks you to bring that record to each prenatal visit, and says the log can be kept in a phone app and emailed to your ob-gyn. Your ob-gyn uses the log to guide your care and, if you take medicine, to check that it is working.1 A paper log works too: see the printable blood sugar log.

How we ranked the apps

  1. Made for gestational diabetes. Fasting and after-meal checks, each tied to its meal, not a plan for long-term diabetes.
  2. Helps with the after-meal timing. Your clinic tells you to check 1 or 2 hours after a meal (see when to check after eating). The app should help you not miss it.
  3. Gets your log to the clinic. A report you can print or send, or a direct link to your care team.
  4. Works for you alone. No clinic account and no one brand of meter needed to start.

1. First Fork

First Fork is built only for gestational diabetes. A Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island shows how much time is left in the after-meal window, and an Apple Watch complication shows it on your wrist. You log a reading by taking a photo of your meter, which the app reads, or you type it in. The PDF report puts your real readings in a grid that is ready to print or share, and meal notes print on its main page. There is no account and no cloud: what you log stays on your phone.2

Fits when: you keep missing the after-meal check, or you want a clean report without a clinic account.

Check first: it needs iOS 26 or later, and it is the newest app on this list (on the App Store since September 2026). Its listing does not mention Bluetooth meter sync, and nothing goes to your clinic by itself: you print or send the report.2

2. Malama

Malama is made for gestational diabetes and goes on after the birth with a postpartum program. It syncs with a Bluetooth glucose meter to pull in your readings, and you can type them in if your meter is not supported. It can read health and fitness data from the Apple Health app. After each reading you can add meal tags, photos and carb notes to share with your care team. The listing says its AI analysis helps find foods and meals that may trigger high readings, and it offers connections to prenatal nutritionists who work with gestational diabetes.3

Fits when: your meter has Bluetooth, or you want a nutritionist and support after the birth.

Check first: the listing does not mention an after-meal timer. If you need a reminder for each check, look at the app before you rely on it.3

3. Gestational Diabetes Tracker

This app, by Rotem Maoz, was made by a developer who had gestational diabetes. You tap "Start meal" once and it sends the 1-hour and 2-hour reminders. You log fasting, before-meal and after-meal readings, link each one to its meal (even hours later), filter your history by reading type, and export a PDF for your doctor or dietitian. You set your own targets and reminder times, and a daily reminder prompts the fasting check.4

Fits when: you want reminders and a PDF, and nothing more.

Check first: the listing describes reminders; it does not mention a countdown on the Lock Screen or Apple Watch, or reading the number from a meter.4

4. GDm-Health

GDm-Health is for people with or at risk of gestational diabetes, or with diabetes from before pregnancy, whose care team asked them to use it. Your readings go securely to your NHS Trust. In the app you can add notes, ask your care team to call you back and get guidance from them. To use all of it, your care team must use the GDm-Health dashboard.5

Fits when: your UK clinic asked you to use it. Then use it, whatever this list says.

Check first: without a care team on GDm-Health, you do not get its main features. If nobody told you to use it, ask your team whether they do.5

5. mySugr

mySugr is a general diabetes logbook. A connected Accu-Chek meter logs your readings by itself, and you can track food, carbs and medicine, see graphs and link Apple Health. The listing puts PDF and Excel reports, blood sugar reminders and meal photos in mySugr PRO.6

Fits when: you already use an Accu-Chek meter.

Check first: the listing does not mention pregnancy or gestational diabetes; it is built for diabetes in general.6

6. Glucose Buddy

Glucose Buddy is a general diabetes tracker. One entry holds a reading, a meal and a medicine, and a food database helps you count carbs. It connects to Dexcom and Apple Health, shows mg/dL or mmol/L, and exports PDF or CSV reports for your doctor.7

Fits when: you use a Dexcom sensor, or you already log in it.

Check first: the listing does not mention pregnancy or gestational diabetes; its 12-week plan and A1C tools are for diabetes in general.7

How to choose in one minute

Whichever app you pick, use the targets your care team gave you, and bring the log to every visit.1

Questions

What is the best app for gestational diabetes?

We rank First Fork first, and we make it: it counts down each after-meal check on your Lock Screen and makes a report for your clinic. Malama is second. If your clinic gave you an app, use that one.

Do I need an app to track gestational diabetes?

No. ACOG asks you to keep a record of your readings and bring it to each prenatal visit. Paper works; ACOG says a log kept in a phone app and emailed to your ob-gyn works too.

Which gestational diabetes apps connect to a glucose meter?

From their App Store listings: Malama syncs with Bluetooth meters, mySugr with Accu-Chek meters and Glucose Buddy with Dexcom. First Fork reads a photo of your meter.

Which app will my clinic accept?

Ask your team. ACOG says logs can be kept in phone apps and emailed to your ob-gyn. Some UK NHS teams use GDm-Health, which sends readings to them directly.
